It is clear that the secretion of E₂ by granulosa cells is critical for the occurrence of normal menstrual cycles. E₂ plays an essential role in feedback to the central nervous system and in preparing the endometrium for implantation of the developing blastocyst. It had been believed that E₂ also played a central role within the ovary in the developing dominant ovarian follicle. This concept, derived from experiments involving rodent models, has been questioned based on findings in women.
