Neonatal Graves disease is a rare condition in neonates born to mothers with active or previously active Graves disease. Neonatal Graves disease occurs in ˜1 in 25,000 pregnancies, and almost all cases are caused by transplacental passage of TSI from mother to fetus.22 In some neonates, the disease lasts for months or years, much longer than could be explained by persistence of passively transferred TSI in utero. The disease can be severe. There have been reports of neonatal Graves disease caused by a mutation in the thyrotopin-receptor gene.23
