Although initially described in 1953,35 the diffuse sclerosing variant of papillary cancer was first formally defined in 1985 when it was identified as a subset of papillary cancers characterized by typical papillary cells, dense sclerosis, abundant psammoma bodies, squamous metaplasia, and significant lymphocytic infiltration.36 Subsequent reviews of papillary carcinomas have identified these tumors in 1% to 3% of cases.35,36 and 37
