According to Knobil,21 the ovary is the “zeitgeber” for the timing of ovulation, with the hypothalamus stimulating pulsatile release of the gonadotropes. In turn, the follicular complex and corpus luteum of the ovary develop in response to gonadotropin stimulation as detailed in Chapter 94.
