The cause of primary hyperparathyroidism is known only for a small subset of patients. Patients who had prior irradiation to the neck region may be at risk years later for the development of primary hyperparathyroidism.9 and 10 The forms of primary hyperparathyroidism associated with familial syndromes have a genetic origin.6,11,12,13,14 and 15 However, most patients with primary hyperparathyroidism do not have a family history of primary hyperparathyroidism or of its associated familial syndromes.
