AMYLIN






Amylin was first isolated from amyloid deposits in an insulinoma, but it is also found in the amyloid of pancreatic islets of patients with type 2 diabetes, as well as in normal islets. Pancreatic amyloid is formed by the aggregation of amylin. Consequently, the hormone is also known as islet amyloid polypeptide.

This 37-amino-acid peptide originates from the CALC-IV gene (see Fig. 53-1). It has 43% sequence homology with CGRP-I and 49% homology with CGRP-II, as well as overlapping bioactivity.85.
