Microneurography can measure sympathetic neural activity from the rate of pulse-synchronous bursts of directly recorded activity in a peripheral nerve, such as the peroneal nerve,
supplying skeletal muscle.70,71 This approach avoids many interpretational difficulties associated with catecholamine measurements, but the procedure requires extensive technical training and cannot measure sympathetic outflow in visceral vascular beds.
