Gastroschisis
Ventral/abdominal wall defect, where the bowel is extended freely in the amniotic fluid space through an opening usually to the right of the umbilicus. Diagnosis is made on prenatal ultrasound or at birth.
Intestinal atresia
Failure of a portion of the intestine to completely form, causing an absence or closure of a part of the intestine. Diagnosis is made on prenatal ultrasound or shortly after birth, presenting as feeding intolerance resulting in abdominal distention, failure to pass stool, and emesis with feedings.
