Pancreatic Neoplasms

Nicholas J. Petrelli, MD, FACS, Consulting Editor
This issue of the Surgical Oncology Clinics of North America is devoted to pancreatic neoplasms. The guest editor is Nipun Merchant, MD. Dr Merchant is the Chief Surgical Officer and Director of the Surgical Oncology Research Programs at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr Merchant was the previous Director of the Vanderbilt Pancreas Center, Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgical Oncology and Co-Leader of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Program at Vanderbilt-Ingram Comprehensive Cancer Center.

This issue of the Surgical Oncology Clinics of North America runs the gamut of pancreatic neoplasms. For example, the article by Drs Tamm, Bhosale, Lee, and Rohren, from the MD Anderson Cancer Center, discusses state-of-the-art imaging of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. As discussed in this article, knowledge of the type of functional tumor is important in choosing appropriate imaging strategies to identify primary lesions and their metastases. An additional article by Drs Li and O’Reilly, from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, discusses both adjuvant and neoadjuvant treatment for pancreatic cancer. This article includes a historic perspective of adjuvant systemic trials in pancreatic cancer and also the use of combination cytotoxic therapy, targeted agents, chemoradiation, and immunotherapy for both adjuvant and neoadjuvant treatment.

Last, there is an excellent article by Drs Helmink, Snyder, Idrees, Merchant, and Parikh on advances in the surgical management of resectable and borderline resectable pancreatic cancer. There is an excellent discussion on the role of minimally invasive surgery and on the complications following pancreaticoduodenectomy.

I would like to thank Dr Merchant for pulling together his colleagues to complete this excellent issue on pancreatic neoplasms. This is an outstanding issue of the Surgical Oncology Clinics of North America for attending staff to share with their trainees.
