Definition: Globalization has been defined as a change ‘in the nature of human interactions across a wide range of spheres, including the economic, social, political, technological, and environmental.’ Increased connectedness of people in space and time is one dimension of globalization that is especially relevant for infectious diseases. The accessibility map (top) shows the estimated travel time in hours and days to the nearest town with a population of at least 50,000 and was produced by integrating a variety of data sources, including road and rail networks, waterways, national borders, and terrain (land cover, slope, and elevation). The top map also shows the major shipping routes. The bottom map shows major air travel routes.
