Multidisciplinary team meetings


The multidisciplinary team (MDT) is a group of healthcare professionals who work together to provide high-quality clinical services to patients, increasing efficiency and producing well-rounded care. The core basis of the team is made of up of the health professionals directly involved in the patient’s care, such as physicians, specialist nurses and physiotherapists. The wider team encompasses professionals who have an adjunctive role during the patient’s journey, such as occupational therapists.



Role of the team


The MDT has become well established in oncology, as cancer is a multisystem disease requiring input from a variety of disciplines. The team meet on a regular basis to discuss the patient’s progress and provide a forum for interdisciplinary communication, allowing for coordination of care and decision making. The meeting is designed to be patient centred and provides an opportunity for communication between the different disciplines, planning of investigations and management. It is a platform on which individual clinicians can discuss complex cases or situations and draw on the collective experience of the team membership to decide on the best approach for an individual patient. This can be particularly important when discussing the patients with a rare condition or situation.
