Mechanism of Action

This drug is an analogue for luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone and acts on the pituitary hormone to inhibit the secretion of gonadotropin, causing chemical orchiectomy within 2 to 4 weeks.


Indications

♦ Advanced prostatic cancer when orchiectomy or estrogen administration is not indicated


♦ Endometriosis

♦ Advanced breast cancer


Metabolism/Excretion

Metabolized in the liver; excreted in the urine. Half-life: 4.2 hours.


Dosage Range


Adult

♦ Men: A 3.6-mg implant every 28 days or a 10.8-mg implant every 12 weeks; intended for long-term administration.

♦ Women: A 3.6-mg implant every 28 days; recommended duration is 6 months.


Pediatric

Safety and efficacy not established.


Drug Preparation/Stability

Available as a preloaded, sterile, disposable syringe with a 14-gauge needle. The unit is contained in a sealed, light- and moisture-proof, aluminum foil laminate pouch containing a desiccant capsule. The pouch should be stored at room temperature.
