Mechanism of Action

Bicalutamide is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen that inhibits the uptake and binding of androgens to the androgen receptors in the prostate gland and the cancer cells. In prostatic carci-noma, the cells are androgen sensitive and respond to treatment that counteracts the effect of androgen or removes the source of androgen.


Indications

Used concomitantly with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) for the treatment of advanced prostatic cancer. Unlabeled use: Combined with orchiectomy, if orchiectomy is preferred over the LHRH analogue.


Metabolism/Excretion

Extensively metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine and feces. Half-life: 5.8 days.
