The needles are inserted quickly at an angle of 15 to 90 degrees in relation to the skin’s surface. When an experienced acupuncturist inserts the needles, you normally will not feel any pain. The sensation is at most like being bitten by an ant. Acupuncture needles are much finer than the hypodermic needles used in hospitals. But most importantly, trained acupuncturists can insert the needles quickly and correctly without causing unnecessary discomfort.

Once the needle has been inserted there are a variety of techniques like raising, thrusting, twirling, plucking and scraping, which strenghten the stimulation and sensation. The patient is supposed to get a specific sensation called “dé qì”. Dé qì is a sensation specific to acupuncture treatment and literally means “obtaining the qi”. The exact feeling varies with each individual patient. It is usually not pain but a unique sensation of soreness, heaviness, distension, or radiation in some direction. After a few treatments, patients usually start to enjoy this sensation because it is both pleasant and they know the good results it brings.

After the needles are inserted, the patient is usually left to relax for about 20-40 minutes. After the needles are removed, get up slowly and carefully.

When the treatment is over, you will probably feel relaxed and energized. Some of your symptoms may disappear instantly. You may sleep better, have a more regulated appetite, feel less pain, or experience less anxiety.

It is advised to be in the best condition possible when you have your acupuncture treatments. Don’t come for your acupuncture treatment when you are very hungry or just after a big meal, and try to be rested. Get the most out of your treatment by being extra careful of your general health the day before and after treatment. Help Chinese medicine help you!

We wish to stress that patients with diabetes must be very careful when receiving treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion since diabetic patients are more prone to infections. There are practitioners that prefer not to use acupuncture and moxibustion when treating diabetic patients. Even without these cautions herbs are considered the best way to manage diabetes. But since acupuncture and moxibustion are effective for diabetes, you should take advantage of these therapies if possible. Be aware of your body and communicate with your practitioner. If you are cautious and the practitioner is qualified and responsible you will be perfectly safe.
